Događanja o stoicima

Posted by Pavel Gregoric dana 10/05/2012

Jean-Baptiste će najprije u ponedjeljak 21. svibnja 2012. u 11.15h održati predavanje na engleskom jeziku pod naslovom “What Philosophy for Marcus Aurelius”.

Idućega dana, u utorak 22. ssvibnja 2012. u 19.00h, Jean-Baptiste će održati izlaganje na engleskom jeziku pod naslovom “What is Stoicism?” u Kulturno informativnom centru, Preradovićeva 5. Sažetak predavanja:

Stoicism was a school of philosophy founded around 300 BC in Athens by Zeno of Citium who gave his lectures at the Painted Colonnade (Stoa poikile), and the life of Stoicism ended shortly after the reign of Marcus Aurelius, around 250 AD. However, Stoicism was so popular and so influential that it not only regularly reappeared as a “neo-Stoicism”, it simply became a common name. There are many differences between what is encapsulated in the common name and the Hellenistic school, with its highly elaborate doctrine. Stoicism was the first philosophical system, acknowledged as such, articulated into logic, physics and ethics. Logic is generally considered to be the ancient form of propositional logic and the ancestor of classical grammar. Many aspects of Stoic physics are out-dated but their general features may still be appealing for modern philosophers, and Stoics articulate ethics and physics in a very stimulating way. Moreover, the more popular part of Stoicism is ethics: Stoic ethics is naturalistic and intellectualist. Stoic founded ethics in nature and argued that virtue is the only good. They attempted to force us to give up emotions and affections: this frequently seems intolerable, but the strength of Stoicism depends on this intellectualism. One of the distinctive features of Stoicism, as well as of most ancient philosophies, is that philosophy is not only a theoretical system but also a “way life”. In that respect, it is clear that “common name” Stoicism is not completely foreign to the ancient school and, in more ways than one, it is still a living philosophy.
